IEE Proceedings – Science, Measurement and Technology

Special Issue on Micro-Nanotechnology

This special issue will consist of invited and contributed papers focusing on current advances in the field of micro-nanotechnology (MNT). Micro-nanotechnology is defined for this call as including the modelling/simulation, fabrication, metrology, testing, assembly and applications of structures and devices having at least one dimension in the 100nm to 1000nm range. MNT follows the “top-down” approach to nanotechnology where structures and devices are built by processing layers of materials in the size domain mentioned above. This contrasts with molecular- and bio-nanotechnology which is based on realising functional structures by applying or emulating processes found in nature, for example molecular self-assembly. This “bottom-up” approach is not within the scope of this special issue.

MNT is a fast moving field with developments occurring on many fronts. It has a wide range of industrial and engineering applications as well as applications in information technology, including data communications and storage. Contributions to this special issue describing recent advances on the following topics are solicited:

  • Micro-and nanoscale fabrication with laser and plasma technologies
  • Advances in supporting technologies: modelling and simulation, lithography, deposition, etching of nanoscale structures
  • MEMS, NEMS and micromachines
  • Micro-nano sensors and actuators
  • Nanoelectronic devices and circuits
  • Nanoscale optics and optoelectronics including quantum devices
  • Photonic micro- and nanostructures, bandgap engineering
  • Nanostorage devices and systems
  • Field emission from nanoscale structures and applications
  • Nanometrology techniques
  • Sub-systems based on these technologies
The list of topics is not exhaustive, and potential contributors may contact the guest editor to discuss the suitability of any contribution. Please contact Professor D. Uttamchandani (guest editor), Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, 204 George Street, Glasgow G1 1XW, UK. E-mail: du@eee.strath.ac.uk; Tel: + 44 141 548 2211; Fax: + 44 141 548 2926

No restriction is placed on the length of papers submitted to the special issue, although as an approximate guideline papers should be around 3000 words in length. All submitted papers will be subject to the IEE Proceedings’ stringent refereeing procedures. Further guidance for authors can be obtained at http://www.iee.org/Publish/Journals/Profjourn/Proc/smt/#Author_guide. First manuscripts should be submitted in PDF format to the editorial assistants at april_linda@iee.org.uk and should be accompanied by a covering email stating clearly the special issue to which the paper is submitted.

The deadline for the submission of first manuscripts is 1 April 2003.
