Background

At the Versailles Economic Summit of 1982 an international collaborative project, now known as the International Advanced Robotics programme (IARP), was initiated. Its activity is currently pursued in an open policy frame with the support of all member countries. In 2002, nations participating in IARP are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Spain, U.K. and USA, with New Zealand and EC as observers. The general ogjective of the IARP is: "To encourage development of advanced robotic systems that can dispence with human work for difficult activities in harsh, demanding or dangerous environments, and to contribute to the revitalisation and growth of the world economy". This is subscribed by all these countries.

Scope

The Workshop will review and discuss the major advances in science and technology with respect to micromachines, microrobotics and systems. The state of the art and the tendency in the research and application of microrobotics and microtechnologies will be the subject of the presentations. The tendency of microtechnologies and microdevices evolution to nanotechnologies and nanodevices is one of the scope of Workshop: "From microsystems to nanosystems".

Topics

Specific topics include but are not limited to:

1) Micro machine, micro robots and systems, including the fields of:
  • micro sensors, micro actuators, micro motors, micro control
  • integration of mechanical and electronical micro components
  • power supply for micro robots and micro machines
  • information telecommunication
  • micro kinematics, dynamics, micro friction and lubrication
  • 3D fabrication of micro mechanical components
2) System technology for micro robots and micro machines, especially on:
  • high resolution measurement instrumentation for high precision positioning and microforce sensing
  • active vision for focus and occultation adaptation
  • micro-tools, micro-grippers and physical effects related to micron-sized part capture and release
  • control strategies included micro- telemanipulation
  • simulation and method of virtual reality
  • user interfaces to the microscopic world
  • multi agency co-ordinating control for multi micro robots
3) Micro electronic mechanical systems MEMS and MOEMS, there existing and potential applications in:
  • medical intervention
  • bioengineering
  • navigation and motion control
  • nuclear power station
  • industrial inspection
  • assembly and manufacturing and so on
4) Microrobots and artificial intelligent behaviour 5) Microtechnologies and nanotechnologies - present and the future 6) Nanotechnologies and nanodevices: tendency of research, development and application.
